President Museveni has commended his wife, Janet Kataaha Museveni, for her role in transforming Karamoja from a region once defined by insecurity and poverty into one experiencing progress in education and development.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Napak District on October 30, 2025, Museveni said that Karamoja’s image has changed significantly due to the First Lady’s leadership and commitment during her tenure as Minister for Karamoja Affairs.
“When my wife was appointed Minister for Karamoja Affairs, she worked wholeheartedly for this region. She promoted education, food security, and infrastructure development,” the President told supporters.
He noted that Mrs Museveni spearheaded community empowerment projects under the Office of the Prime Minister, including the distribution of ox-ploughs, construction of valley tanks, and school feeding programmes that improved agricultural productivity and access to education.
The President highlighted her strong advocacy for girl-child education, saying she worked closely with local leaders and religious institutions to ensure more girls stayed in school.
Mrs Museveni also championed the establishment and expansion of vocational training centres, which have since equipped youth in Karamoja with practical skills for self-reliance.
“She was very passionate about Karamoja. She often told me that development begins with education, and she worked hard to ensure that children in Karamoja go to school,” the President said.
Museveni’s remarks marked the conclusion of his campaign tour in the Karamoja sub-region, where he spent several days meeting local leaders and residents ahead of the 2026 general elections.
After wrapping up his engagements in Napak, the President proceeded to Kapelebyong District to launch his campaign in the Teso sub-region.
His campaign in Karamoja has largely focused on peace consolidation, wealth creation, and improving service delivery, themes he said would remain central to his next term if re-elected.
